Where LinkedIn's numbers come from
Campaign Manager shows performance metrics for each ad set, and you can download the same metrics as performance reports. Which columns appear depends on the objective and ad format you chose, and conversion metrics only appear once conversions are added to the ad set. Since October 2025 LinkedIn calls the old campaign group a campaign and the old campaign an ad set; LinkedIn says the new names don't change how anything works.
The core metrics, as LinkedIn defines them
The definitions below are LinkedIn's own, shortened. Averages such as CTR, CPC and CPM are calculated from totals, so recalculate them from totals when you combine several ad sets.
| Metric | What LinkedIn counts |
|---|---|
| Spent | The amount spent on ad impressions or interactions. |
| Impressions | The number of times your ad was displayed. For Sponsored Content on desktop, at least half of the ad must be in view for one second. |
| Clicks | Chargeable clicks, based on the ad set's objective. |
| Average CTR, CPC and CPM | Clicks divided by impressions; total spend divided by total clicks; total spend per 1,000 impressions. |
| Key results and cost per result | Outcomes based on your objective and ad set settings, and the total spend divided by those results. |
| Conversions | Desired actions taken after someone clicked or saw your ad. When a conversion can't be tied to an individual account, LinkedIn uses modeling to estimate it. |
| Leads and cost per lead | Leads collected through the ad set, and the amount spent per lead. |
| Lead form completion rate | The share of opened forms that were submitted. |
| Reach and average frequency | Unique member accounts with at least one impression, and the average number of impressions per account. Both are modeled, not exact. |
| Engagement rate | Paid and free clicks divided by total impressions. |
| Video views | A video playing for at least two continuous seconds with half of it in view, or a click on the call to action, whichever comes first. |
Which metrics matter for which objective
LinkedIn groups its objectives into three tiers: brand awareness, consideration and conversions. Each objective comes with a recommended optimization goal, and that goal is the natural headline number for its report.
| Objective | Headline result | Read it together with |
|---|---|---|
| Brand awareness | Reach | Impressions, average frequency, cost per 1,000 member accounts reached |
| Website visits | Landing page clicks | Average CTR, average CPC |
| Engagement | Engagement clicks | Engagement rate, reactions, comments, shares |
| Video views | Video views | Video completions, cost per result |
| Lead generation | Leads | Lead form opens, lead form completion rate, cost per lead |
| Website conversions | Conversions | Conversion rate, cost per conversion, total conversion value |
| Job applicants | Landing page clicks | Average CTR, average CPC |
A report template you can copy
Use one row per metric and keep the same order every month, so changes are easy to spot. Remove the rows that don't apply to your objective rather than leaving them empty.
| Metric | What it tells you | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Spent | How much of the budget has gone out | Every report, next to the plan |
| Key results | How many outcomes the objective produced | Every report, as the headline |
| Cost per result | What one outcome costs | Every report; compare periods with the same objective |
| Impressions | How often the ad was shown | Awareness, and to explain a change in clicks |
| Reach and average frequency | How many accounts saw the ad, and how often | Awareness and fatigue checks; read them as estimates |
| Clicks and average CTR | Whether the ad earns chargeable clicks | Website visits, job applicants, creative tests |
| Average CPC and CPM | The price of a click or of 1,000 impressions | Comparing audiences, bids or periods |
| Leads and cost per lead | How many forms were sent, and at what price | Lead generation |
| Lead form completion rate | How many people the form itself loses | Lead generation, after changing form fields |
| Conversions and cost per conversion | The website actions you defined, and their cost | Website conversions, once conversion tracking is set up |
| Total conversion value and return on ad spend | The value you gave your conversions, against spend | Only when you set a value for your conversions |
| Engagement rate | Interaction with the ad, paid and free | Engagement campaigns and content tests |
Data rules to check before you compare periods
- Reach, average frequency and the other delivery metrics are modeled. LinkedIn recommends using them only directionally, not to compare with past performance.
- Delivery metrics usually take 24 to 36 hours to appear, so yesterday's reach may still be missing.
- In LinkedIn's reporting API, reach is only available for date ranges of 92 days or less.
- Report dates are in UTC, so a reporting day can start and end at a different hour than in your own time zone.
- Performance data is kept for ten years. Daily detail is kept for six months, and longer ranges that reach past it are rounded to whole months.
- Breakdowns by job title, function or seniority are approximate, can be delayed by 12 to 24 hours, and leave out values with fewer than 3 events.
Putting LinkedIn next to other platforms
Before LinkedIn goes into a cross-platform report, check that each number means the same thing on every platform. A LinkedIn click is a chargeable click that depends on the objective, and LinkedIn conversions include view conversions as well as click conversions. Add up counts such as impressions, clicks and spend only when the currency matches, then recalculate CTR, CPC and CPM from those totals instead of averaging rates.
How Mecrio reports LinkedIn
- Mecrio reads LinkedIn's own figures through LinkedIn's official reporting API: impressions, chargeable clicks, spend in your ad account's currency, website conversions and conversion value, plus landing page clicks, engagements, video views and completions, and leads from LinkedIn forms.
- CTR, CPC, CPM, cost per conversion and conversion rate come from one set of formulas used for every platform. If a denominator is missing, the rate stays empty instead of showing zero.
- In cross-platform totals, counts are added up and rates are recalculated from the totals. Reach and frequency are not summed, and spend in different currencies is neither added up nor converted.
- All-time figures cover ten years, the period LinkedIn keeps performance data. LinkedIn reach is left out of all-time totals, because LinkedIn only provides it for ranges of up to 92 days.
- Mecrio AI answers questions about these numbers with your own campaign data, and nothing changes in your account until you approve it.
