Reddit Ads guide

Reddit Ads guide (2026)

To advertise on Reddit you open a Reddit Ads account, pick an objective and build a campaign, an ad group and an ad that runs as a post. You can reach people through the communities they engage with, their interests and the keywords in their conversations. This guide summarises Reddit's own help pages as checked on 28 October 2026.

Opening a Reddit Ads account

Reddit Ads runs on a Reddit account, so you need an existing or a new one first. Reddit notes that karma does not affect ad performance and that ads cannot run on accounts set to Not Safe For Work. Creating the ads account is free.

During setup you pick a username, which appears on your ads if you use that account as a posting profile. You also enter your name, your business's legal name, your industry, and the country and currency of your first ad account. The username, the country and the currency cannot be changed later. If you create ads for another company, you mark that you work with an advertising agency.

How a Reddit campaign is built

  • Campaign: you choose the objective, which decides how your ads are optimised and how you are charged. You can also set an optional spend cap for the campaign's lifetime.
  • Ad group: you choose the optimisation goal. Unless campaign budget optimisation is on, you also set the budget and the bidding strategy here.
  • Ad: the post people see. Depending on the objective, it can be a free-form, image, video or carousel post.

Objectives

Reddit offers five campaign objectives. The objective optimises your ads for your goal and also shapes the ad group, the ad setup and the bidding, so choose the one result you want most.

Ad formats and conversation placements

Image, video and carousel posts are the core ad types. Free-form ads combine text, images, videos and GIFs in one ad, and carousel ads put several images or videos in one swipeable unit. File rules for each type are on our Reddit ad specs page.

Ads can run in the feed and on the comments page. Reddit calls ads in comment threads Conversation Ads. They are a placement rather than a separate creative, so the rules of the underlying ad type apply, and they can run together with the feed. Reddit says a thumbnail should be provided for the conversation placement.

Targeting: communities, interests and keywords

Reddit targeting starts from what people engage with. Community targeting lets you target specific subreddits, or reach people across Reddit who have visited or shown interest in them. Interest targeting uses the content people have interacted with, and keyword targeting reaches people who use specific words or join conversations that contain them.

  • Excluded communities: your ads are not eligible for auctions in the communities you exclude.
  • Custom audiences: Pixel retargeting, customer lists, the Conversions API and third-party audience segments.
  • Location: countries, states, ZIP codes or Designated Market Areas.
  • Devices: target people on different devices or by mobile carrier.
  • Automated targeting: Reddit can find the audience for each ad from signals such as the creative, the landing page and user behaviour.

Budgets and bidding

You choose a daily or a lifetime budget. With campaign budget optimisation, you set one budget on the campaign and Reddit spreads spend across ad groups based on performance. It is available for every objective except sales with a catalog. Lowest cost is Reddit's default bidding strategy. Cost cap and target cost give you more control over cost, and manual bidding is available for ad groups in any objective.

Reddit sells ads in live auctions, so an ad group may overspend its budget by up to 20%, and Reddit does not guarantee that it spends the full budget. Budget changes can take up to 60 minutes to take effect. Reddit Ads shows the amounts that apply to your own account.

Measurement: Reddit Pixel and Conversions API

The Reddit Pixel is a snippet of JavaScript on your website. It tracks the actions visitors take after seeing or clicking your ad. The Conversions API is a server-to-server connection that sends conversion events without website code, and it supports desktop, mobile, app and offline events.

Reddit recommends using both together and requires event deduplication when you do. Events sent through the Conversions API must arrive within seven days of when they happen. Reddit's developer documentation also says a Pixel is required for every ad group starting 13 July 2026.

Ad review and common rejections

Reddit's internal teams review ads against the Reddit Advertising Policy, which is enforced globally unless noted otherwise. If an ad is rejected, you get a notification with the reason and can amend and resubmit it. Reddit's editorial requirements cover the most common problems:

  • The display address must match the landing page address, and the advertised product must be available on the landing page.
  • Use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, keep capitals to no more than half of the ad text and avoid excessive emojis or symbols.
  • Represent the product accurately and do not withhold information to get clicks.
  • Video ads need high-quality audio and visuals, and the spoken language must match the ad text.
  • Ads in a language other than English must target the region or country where that language is widely used, and the landing page language must match the ad.

Some categories have their own policy pages, including alcohol, gambling, financial and cryptocurrency products, healthcare and political ads. Read the page for your category before you build the ad.

Advertising from Türkiye

We did not find a Reddit help page that lists the countries where businesses can open a Reddit Ads account, so this guide makes no claim either way. Reddit does say that you choose your country and currency at sign-up and cannot change them later.

Turkish is not in the list of targetable languages in Reddit's developer documentation. Reddit's editorial rules also require ads in other languages to target the region or country where the language is widely used. To reach Turkish speakers, plan with location targeting rather than language targeting.

Running Reddit campaigns with Mecrio

  • You connect your Reddit ad account through Reddit's own sign-in screen. Mecrio then creates the campaign, ad group and ad in that account, all paused, so nothing spends until you start them.
  • The ad is published as a post from the Reddit profile linked to your ad account, with your title, image, video or carousel and link. Communities and interests are picked from Reddit's own lists.
  • Before anything is created, Mecrio checks that a video has a cover image and that the ad account has a payment method. It also flags landing page addresses over 268 characters.
  • On lead campaigns Mecrio asks you for the click bid amount instead of making one up. If you set an age range, you are told it will not be applied on Reddit.
  • After publishing you can change the budget, start or pause the campaign, and replace the post's title or image. Reddit's developer documentation allows only the comment setting of an existing post to change, so Mecrio creates a new post with your change and puts it into the same ad.
  • Ad spend is paid to Reddit from your own ad account. Mecrio takes no cut of your spend.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I target specific subreddits?

Yes. Community targeting lets you target specific subreddits or reach people who have visited or shown interest in them. You can also exclude communities, and your ads are then not eligible for auctions there.

Do I need the Reddit Pixel?

Reddit's developer documentation says a Pixel is required for every ad group starting 13 July 2026. For conversion tracking, Reddit recommends using the Pixel together with the Conversions API, with event deduplication.

Can I advertise in Turkish on Reddit?

Reddit's editorial rules allow ads in other languages when they target the region or country where the language is widely used. Turkish is not in Reddit's list of targetable languages, so use location targeting to reach Turkish speakers.

What are Conversation Ads?

They are ads shown on the comments page and in conversation threads. They are a placement, not a separate creative, so they follow the rules of the underlying ad type and can run together with feed placements.

Can Mecrio create free-form ads on Reddit?

No. Mecrio sets up image, video and carousel posts on Reddit. Free-form posts can be created in Reddit's own Ads Manager.
